A New Kind of Funky Japanese Green: Organic GABA Green Tea

This tea is a first for Den’s. This is our first time featuring a tea that has been produced in such a way so as to increase the GABA content in the leaf. What results is a slightly sour-sweet tea that is not bitter or astringent.

What is GABA? GABA is a naturally resides in the human body’s central nervous system, such as the brain and spinal cord, and acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter that suppresses excitement. It helps to relieve tension and stress, and relaxes and calms brain excitement, thus improving the quality of sleep. We produce GABA in our bodies, but we also consume GABA in the foods we eat as well as the things we drink. Tea actually contains GABA, but Japanese tea producers actually found a way to increase the GABA content in tea leaves.

The profile of this tea, while tasting different that your standard sencha, does seem to have a calming affect on some of our staff. The aroma is like that of tortilla chips and tomatoes; there is a slightly bready, tomato patch smell. The tea brews up a fall-colored brownish-orange and, when brewed softer, has a lighter-orange color. The flavor is slightly sweet, savory, and sour with virtually no bitterness and little astringency.

Have you tried this tea yet? We just released it and it is a first in the Den’s Tea collection. We have a wide variety of teas that we offer so we are glad to offer this unique tea in our collection.
